Indian cricket is heading into a new phase of leadership. As Roger Binny prepares to step down due to age restrictions, Rajeev Shukla is all set to step in as the interim president of the BCCI. With high-profile tournaments like the IPL and Asia Cup around the corner, Shukla’s steady hand is expected to guide Indian cricket through this critical transition.

Quick Read:

● Rajeev Shukla to assume BCCI interim presidency, succeeding Roger Binny.

● Binny’s tenure ends due to BCCI’s age limit of 70 by July 2025.

● Shukla’s experience ensures stability during IPL and Asia Cup challenges.

● New president to be elected at BCCI’s September 2025 AGM.

In a dramatic turn for Indian cricket, veteran administrator Rajeev Shukla is poised to take the helm of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) as interim president, succeeding Roger Binny, the 1983 World Cup hero. Binny, who has led the BCCI since October 2022, is nearing the age limit of 70, as mandated by the board’s constitution, prompting this pivotal change. With his 70th birthday on July 19, 2025, Binny’s tenure is set to conclude, paving the way for Shukla to step in temporarily until a new president is elected at the BCCI’s Annual General Meeting (AGM) in September 2025.

Shukla, 65, is no stranger to cricket administration. A seasoned figure in the BCCI, he has served as vice-president since 2020, was the IPL chairman until 2018, and held the role of secretary at the Uttar Pradesh Cricket Association (UPCA) until 2017. His deep experience makes him a natural fit to ensure continuity during this transition. “It’s a stop-gap arrangement, but Shukla’s expertise will keep the board’s operations seamless,” a BCCI insider shared.

The timing couldn’t be more critical. The BCCI is navigating a packed 2025, with the IPL season resuming after a tense suspension due to India-Pakistan border tensions and the Indian men’s team preparing for a high-stakes Test series in England. Shukla’s interim leadership will be tested as he oversees these events, alongside decisions on India’s participation in the Asia Cup, amid ongoing geopolitical debates.

Fans on X are buzzing with reactions. Some laud Shukla’s appointment, citing his administrative prowess: “Shukla’s been a steady hand; good call for interim president!” Others are nostalgic about Binny’s legacy, with one user posting, “End of an era for Roger Binny—his 1983 World Cup glory will always inspire us.” Yet, there’s curiosity about who will claim the permanent role, with names like former BCCI president Sourav Ganguly floating in discussions.

Binny’s exit marks the end of a storied chapter. As India’s highest wicket-taker in the 1983 World Cup, his contributions on the field were legendary, and his presidency brought stability to the BCCI. But with Shukla at the helm and a new election looming, Indian cricket is on the cusp of a fresh innings. Who will be the next big name to lead the world’s richest cricket board? The countdown to September’s AGM has begun.
